Tenuta San Leonardo is an estate winery and collection of vineyards at the base of the Dolomites in Trentino with a nearly 1000 year history.
The Marchese, or Marquis, Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga fell in love with Bordeaux style reds after working with Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the creator of the legendary Sassicaia in Tuscany, his grandfather’s friend. He returned to Tenuta San Leonardo and planted the estate’s first Cabernet Sauvignon vines and with the help of Giacomo Tachis, the enologist made famous by his work with Sassicaia, started work on producing a classic Bordeaux style Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend. The resulting flagship wine, San Leonardo, became almost immediately considered as one of the best wines in Italy.
It's important to note that the production of French wine styles and grape varieties are much less of a break from tradition in Trentino than they are in Tuscany with their controversial ‘Super Tuscan’ Bordeaux style wines. Indeed, one of the key grapes in the blend of San Leonardo, Carmenère (previously thought to be Cabernet Franc by Carlo until the 1990s) had been grown on the estate since the end of the 19th Century.
Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga has been Head Wine Maker at Tenuta San Leonardo since taking over from his father 2001. He has raised the viticulture and vinification standards to even greater heights with the reintroduction of traditional and labour intensive processes like training the vines on Pergolas to maintain low alcohol levels in the face of warmer vintages.
The result of the estate's unique mountain terroir and traditional methods is a wine that has the mystique of Right Bank Bordeaux from the early 20th century with its own inimitable charms.
