THE GRAND TOUR, AN HISTORICAL DEEP DIVE

A Tasting of Decadent Fine Wines & Cheese Pairings

Post the Christmas & New Year festivities we sink into the January Blues, what better way to banish them than to  join us for the next in our series of Deep Dives hosted by Patricia Michelson and Senior Cheesemonger Max Melvin, with what may be our most ambitious in the series yet! We will change focus from a particular subregion to, simply put…decadence, as we explore some of the great fine wine and cheese pairings in history – some of which you may be familiar with and some of which will be new to you. The matches will take in the history of Britain’s gastronomic relationship with continental Europe from Pepys to Patricia.
A decadent tasting would not be complete without Brie aux Truffe, paired with a gently oxidised grower champagne. British classics such as Montgomery’s Cheddar and aged Claret to the great French pairings such as summer milk Comté and Vin Jaune, Munster Geromé and Grand Cru Alsatian Gewurztraminer, and the magic combination of Roquefort Carles and the noble Sauternes.
Further afield, there is the Sicilian Ragusano Monostalla of classical antiquity with the dry complex Marsala style wines of Marco di Bartoli and Andalusian solera aged Amontillado sherry with nutty hard sheep milk cheeses of northern and southern Spain. Though new to many of us, theses pairings would have been well known to British merchants, judges and aristocrats of prior centuries.
With this in mind we have put together a flight of the best of these wines each paired with cheeses and a smattering of additional decadence in the form of white truffles, just for good measure!
This would make the perfect Christmas gift for any food loving friends or family, or if you’ve been gifted LA FROMAGERIE vouchers, what better way to redeem them than treating yourself to an evening of decadence.
