For Autumn, one of our senior cheesemongers, Max Melvin, has put together his ideal cheeseboard for this time of year.

These cheeses showcase the best of seasonal, raw milk, local starter and pasture fed cheeses. One for the adventurous cheese enthusiast!

CHEESES

  • Crottin de Chavignol | Sancerre, Unpasteurised Goat's Milk.  1 unit (60g). A small flattened ball of crumbly-textured cheese with a rich smooth taste. Ideal for grilling when just a hint of moulds appear, but also delicious upon further maturation when the blue-grey velvety moulds cover the cheese.

  • El Buen Pastor | Orepesa, Unpasteurised Sheep Milk (200g).   This is a signature cheese for La Fromagerie. The whole story, from the father/son family tradition as Shepherds and cheesemakers, to the land they farm, the number of sheep in their flock, and finally the seasons that spell out the taste of the cheeses.

  • Stonebeck | Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, Unpasteurised Cow's Milk (200g). It has taken over 2 years to bring this cheese to more than the immediate local shops, and the Northern Dairy Shorthorn cattle produce a wonderfully fresh and grassy tasting cheese. Very limited supply but worth every bite.

  • Fleur de Maquis  | Torra Vescovato, Corsica, Pasteurised Ewe’s Milk. 1 unit (300g). A fresh cheese with a solid consistency, completely covered with aromatic herbs such as rosemary, thyme, fresh sweet chillies.

  • Cupidon | Col de Fach, Loubieres, Unpasteurised Ewe's Milk. 1 unit. A delightful small creamy cheese with a band of spruce to give a sappy earthy finish.  A perfect cheese for those who love rich, melting styles.

  • Lanark Blue | Lanarkshire, Unpasteurised Sheep's Milk (200g) - Humphrey Errington’s powerful blue cheese is not for the faint hearted, but then not many cheeses would be a worthy partner to whisky. The sharp acidity & meaty vegetal flavours are truly Scottish in every way, & this cheese is best eaten right at the end of the meal as its flavours are quite overpowering.
