Product information:

La Fromagerie's Cheesemongers' Summer Cheese & Wine Board has been chosen by La Fromagerie’s Senior Cheesemonger and Academy of Cheese teacher, Max Melvin.

This board represents the most artisan cheeses we stock that are both in season now and particularly suited to the warmer weather. For the adventurous cheese lover in your life. Perhaps you!

St Jude from Norfolk did particularly well at the British Artisan cheese awards recently where judges Patricia Michelson and Max Melvin awarded it gold. Pelardon is a meltingly soft and almost sweet raw milk goat's cheese from the wild Cevennes in the south of France. Piave Vecchio is an exquisite Dolomites cheese with notes of passion fruit. Chevrotin shows off the pastures of the Savoie with a texture like Reblochon but a cleaner yet more aromatic flavour. Harbourne Blue, from Totnes, Devon, is the ultimate summer blue, light but complex with beautiful acidity.

CHEESES

  • St Jude | Suffolk, Unpasteurised Cow's Milk - 1 unit (90g). Made by Julie Cheyney in Suffolk, the milk is slowly and gently turned into curds with little intervention. Simply lifting the curds and ladling into moulds, turning daily until ready for sale. The flavours of the pasture are intact giving the cheese an earthy richness becoming more evident as it ages.

  • Pelardon | Cevennes, Unpasteurised Goat's Milk - 1 unit (60g). A thick, medallion-shaped soft cheese with a natural white rind that, with maturing, becomes dotted with blue moulds. A traditional farmhouse cheese with gentle goaty, nutty tastes and a fudgy texture.

  • Piave Vecchio | Veneto, Pasteurised Cow's Milk - 200g. “Vecchio” means “old” or “mature,” and Piave Vecchio is typically aged for at least 12 to 18 months. Piave Vecchio is known for its rich, nutty, and slightly sweet flavour profile.

  • Chevrotin | Savoie, Unpasteurised Goat's Milk (250g) - A rare goat's milk washed rind from high in the mountains of Savoie. Pale orange in colour, the rind is smooth and looks rather like a smaller, plumper Reblochon. The taste is rich and floral.

  • Harbourne Blue | Totnes, Devon. Pasteurised Goat's Milk (200g). Made by Ben Harris on the Ticklemore farm – which produces several other of our cheeses – the milk for this blue comes from a farm at Buckfast, on the edge of Dartmoor.

WINE

I came across this wine in our work with Berry Bros. & Rudd, co-hosting their cheese and wine paring events. A really surprising rosé and bone fide fine wine, it was a revelation with every cheese we tried with it with. Rich texture and savoury and almost Aperol notes sitting under the freshness required to cut through. One of the wine highlights of my year. Don’t serve it too cold and give it some time to open up!

  • 2019 José Luis Ripa Rioja Rosado Sáenz de Navarrete, Rioja, Spain
    70% Garnacha 30% Tempranillo (Organic)

Since 2016 José Luis Ripa, master of wine and wine maker, and husband to Maria Lopez de Heredia of Viña Tondonia fame, has made just one wine. Using a tiny one hectare plot in the Najerilla Valley in Rioja Alta, he makes a dark, almost coppery rosé designed as a gastronomic and age worthy rosado with little relation to the pale light rosés made in huge quantities since the turn of the century. Inspired by historic fine rosés like Château Simone, Pibarnon, Trevallon, Tempier and indeed Viña Tondonia Rioja Rosado. The nose is savoury and complex, offering wild strawberries and dried citrus peel layered with amaro herbs, as well as a subtle saline edge. A gentle oxidative note adds further intrigue. The palate is textured, combining red berry fruit with hints of stone fruit, a lactic note and discreet oak spice. A lovely background salinity carries through to a long, bright finish. Maybe the perfect wine style for cheese! Drink at 10-12C to appreciate all it has to offer.
